QUESTIONS

What is plastic lumber made of?

It is made from recycled plastic milk jugs, otherwise destined for a landfill. When using plastic lumber, you are helping the environment as well as utilizing a long-lasting, maintenance-free product.

Do you use any special tools when working with plastic lumber?

No. It cuts and works easily with standard woodworking tools. Most people find it easier to work than wood, because there are no imperfections such as knots to deal with. Use a fine tooth carbide blade for cutting—the plastic will not clog or dull the blade. The edges finish easily with a router.

Is it slippery when wet?

If you'’re wearing shoes with any kind of tread on them, you will find that your feet “grab” the surface, with a slight suction cup effect. Barefoot or smooth-soled shoes, you will find the surface similar to smooth concrete.

Can it be used for structural components?

No. Plastic lumber is extremely well-suited for the walking surfaces of decks and marine docks. It is also well-suited for railings as well as industrial cribbing and blocking uses. It cannot be used in load-bearing applications such as joists, beams or studs.

How do you clean it?

Plastic lumber cleans easily with a solution of bleach and water. Other commercial cleaners such as Simple Green and Soft Scrub also work well. Unlike composite decking boards, it can also be pressure-washed.

Can you paint it?

There’'s no need to paint it, because it comes in over a dozen color-fast, no maintenance colors. Beyond that, its waxy, non-porous surface makes for a difficult surface for paint to stick to.
